Scott Brown’s replacement has been endlessly discussed for what feels like years now. But do Celtic already have him at the club?
Once again, Celtic are going to have to find a way to replace their heroic captain. Brown injured himself against Hibs and looks like he’ll be out for around a month. It’s a bitter blow to both him and the club ahead of some huge matches over the next 30 days or so.
It’s not often that the Hoops have to look for a replacement for the captain. Brown’s fitness levels have been simply remarkable over the last few seasons. It’s difficult to grudge him an injury considering how relentless he’s been under Brendan Rodgers.

But Celtic already have a short-term replacement ready and waiting for his moment to shine – Youssouf Mulumbu.
Granted, question marks are hovering over the Congolese midfielder. He was unusually not part of the Celtic squad in their 4-2 win against Hibernian on Saturday. The reasons for his omission haven’t been revealed. Instead, it was Eboue Kouassi taking his place.
Kouassi sparks a mixed reaction from Hoops supporters given his lack of an impact since joining Celtic. Having to play him against Leipzig would be a horrifying thought given their quality and tempo. Kouassi wants too much time on the ball, and most likely won’t even be considered to start on Thursday night.

Mulumbu’s the man
Mulumbu, however, should be at the front of the pile.
The former Kilmarnock ace has been impressive on both occasions he’s had an outing in a Celtic jersey. He was just as dominant in the midfield when he was at Killie, and has the composure and skill-set required to play in Brown’s role.
For those perhaps doubting whether he can play against a side with as high a tempo as Leipzig, look at the Salzburg game. Mulumbu was pitched in and did a superb job in the engine room. He can break-up play and has terrific feet for a player in their more senior years as a footballer.

He may very well be carrying a knock given his omission from the Hibs line-up. If he isn’t however, then he simply has to be given the chance to impress once more on Thursday night.
Callum McGregor being pulled back from left-mid is another alternative. This would, however, require one of either Scott Sinclair, Lewis Morgan, or Mikey Johnston to feature. Neither of those individuals have had consistent game-time this season and could struggle with a strong onus on them to create.
If Brown really is out for a month, then Mulumbu simply has to be his replacement in the short-term.
The former West Brom man was signed for times like these, and it’s time to give him his shot.
