A timely reminder for Celtic

If nothing else, Rangers’ progression into the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League last night was a timely reminder for Celtic that there is so much work left in this season to achieve our goals.

Yes, you may be screaming right now: “John, it doesn’t matter, it’s all about Celtic.”

This isn’t inaccurate. Ange Postecoglou and the Bhoys have worked themselves into a position where it genuinely is all in our hands in the remaining six or seven games of the campaign.

I’m not trying to downplay that and I certainly don’t fear Rangers.

My point is that for all the feeling of excitement that our job has been done this season – it most certainly hasn’t.

We have two massive fixtures coming up against a capable opponent, never mind the other four league games against the rest of the top six Scottish Premiership sides.

I’m not a subscriber to the notion you can reach the last four of a major European competition by fluke.

Everyone at Celtic – and that includes supporters – needs to understand that nothing is guaranteed here. There could be games it doesn’t all go our way, Rangers themselves could be energised by that result last night, a blip or a bad result isn’t completely out of the question.

If the team stay on edge, they’ll play better.

Thankfully, for our own peace of mind, Postecoglou and his team have earned the kind of trust that enables us to go into this final stage of the season with confidence.

I have full belief in this group of players and their ability to now finish the job. The last people to be distracted will be them.

The last few weeks have been incredibly exciting and we’ve all enjoyed a good laugh at their expense. It’s now a serious time once again and there’s a lot of football still to be played.

Let’s keep the pressure up and see this through!
