Andy Townsend believes Robbie Keane would be a success at Celtic, but many supporters remain unconvinced by the former Hoops striker.
But the talkSPORT pundit’s view on Keane will not be shared by every Celtic supporter.
The former Republic of Ireland international believes Keane possesses the qualities needed to succeed in Glasgow should the opportunity ever arise.

Townsend sees Celtic credentials in Robbie Keane
Speaking about the former Celtic striker’s managerial prospects, Townsend told the Daily Record, “I could see Robbie Keane being a success at Celtic, he’d bring all his energy in there and I could see him being a natural successor for Martin.
He’d be the best bet for them, he has a real appetite and a real excitement around him. He oozes that determination to be a success and I could see that really working at Celtic.
“They could have a big call to make this summer but I think that would be the right one, should Martin O’Neill move on.
“Robbie has really found excitement in management. He seems excited at the prospect of his future in football management because he had a very good career as a player, he’s gonna get some exceptional opportunities come his way.
“He’s put himself out there now, he’s available. There will be a lot of jobs available for him.”
It is a glowing endorsement and one that underlines the regard Keane is held in by figures within the game.
Townsend’s focus on energy, ambition and determination paints a picture of a coach capable of handling the demands that come with managing a club of Celtic’s size.
Celtic supporters remain unconvinced by Robbie Keane
However, Townsend’s backing does not necessarily reflect the mood among the Celtic support.
Recent discussion among supporters has shown many remain unconvinced that Keane would be their preferred choice if the club were ever searching for a new manager.
Previous debate has also suggested figures such as Martin O’Neill enjoy significantly stronger backing among supporters when compared with Keane.
That does not mean Keane’s credentials should be dismissed. What Townsend’s comments highlight is the growing gap between how football insiders view the former striker and how many Celtic supporters currently see him.
Townsend has undoubtedly strengthened the case for Keane as a future contender. For now, Townsend may see a future Celtic manager in Keane, but many supporters still need convincing.
