Anthony Ralston contract talks get a big thumbs up from the Celtic support
It appears the Celtic supporters have very quickly gotten behind the idea of handing out a new contract to defender Anthony Ralston.
Ange Postecoglou stated yesterday that the club has plenty of faith in Ralston and that the player was in contract talks over a new deal [Scottish Sun]. His current contract expires in the summer of 2022.
Ralston has undergone something of a renaissance this season. Back when he extended his current deal for another year, there was widespread anger that he was being kept on. Many didn’t believe him to be capable of making an impact in Glasgow, and there was plenty of evidence to back that up too.
The Scotland youth international had been unimpressive during loan spells with Dundee United and St Johnstone. Not to mention he’d largely struggled to make any sort of impact over the previous several years.
This season, however, Ralston is a changed man. He’s suddenly found some purpose under Postecoglou, and has become the club’s first-choice right-back.
Anthony Ralston has proven he’s willing to throw everything into the Celtic cause
Ralston still has his moments. His crossing is something that badly needs working on. The same goes for his passing as he looks to become a better all-round player under the new boss.
But nobody can complain about what the Celtic defender has brought to the table this season. He’s shown that he’ll run through brick walls for the club, throwing his body into dangerous situations and doing whatever he can to keep Celtic from conceding.
There just seems like there’s an added level of quality to his game this season. Given his work rate, he’s starting to look like a nightmare to play against. There’s a reason he hasn’t looked out of place both in Glasgow derby and European matches.
Even Josip Juranovic, a Croatian international right-back, is struggling to win the spot off of Ralston. It’s clear, even this early on into the season, that the building blocks are being put in place.
And many Celtic supporters already believe he’s done enough to earn a new deal. Here’s a look at some of the reaction on Twitter to the prospect:
I’d give him a 2 year extension.— Minty’s Islam CSC (@Moonbeamsnomore) October 24, 2021
Gives him security and time to see if he can bring his game on, plus benefits the squad.
Assuming we’ve adequately upgraded in that time, he’ll surely get a decent move elsewhere – and we’ll get a fee for him.
Asset management is crucial.
I’d much rather sign a jersey player like Ralston who though limited always gives 100% of what he has for the club, than someone like Bolingolli who might be a better player if he turns up but you never can rely on for commitment to the cause. Ralston will never down tools.— Dermot Houston (@DeRebCelts) October 25, 2021
He’s a bit limited in an attacking sense although still pretty effective in regards to goals and assists.— MonTheHoopleheads (@hoopleheads_) October 24, 2021
Effort wise I don’t think anyone tried harder.
If everyone is fit he probably won’t start but we still need backup so I’d be happy if we gave him a new contract.
He’s earned atleast another year with the effort he’s put in and improvement he’s made in the last couple of months.— Derek (@DerekRi46434667) October 24, 2021
Yes he deserves it and will improve under Ange— Angeball (@cellic1888) October 24, 2021
