Australia supporters revel in Celtic man Tom Rogic's sublime display
Celtic supporters and Socceroos obsessives can frequently agree: Australia midfielder Tom Rogic is like nothing else when he’s on form.
Rogic, so important to Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic side this season, has been outstanding. He has a formidable 9 assists and 3 goals to his name this season [Transfermarkt], having had a full pre-season to address an ongoing injury niggle and regain fitness.
It’s worked. In Postecoglou’s system, alongside a fellow number 10 in David Turnbull, Rogic has regularly dictated the outcome of games. Whether it’s through a goal of his own, or any number of passes to advancing teammates, Rogic has shown that extra little bit of quality that’s made a substantial difference.
And so, it was natural that he’d get called up for Australia. Yesterday, Socceroos assistant René Meulensteen raved about the “touch of class” Rogic can bring to proceedings. So it proved.
After just 14 seconds, it looked as if the Wizard of Oz had scored. Instead, former Celtic youngster Jackson Irvine’s offside prevented Australia taking an earlier lead. No matter, Rogic just kept going.
On the half-hour mark, Rogic played a sumptuous ball to Jamie Maclaren, who duly headed it in to make it 1-0. Then, just before half-time, the irrepressible Rogic got exactly what his play deserved, latching on to a lovely through ball and finishing with consummate ease.
Delightful stuff, in a game that holds real significance for Australia. Before the game, the Socceroos trailed Saudi Arabia and Japan in their World Cup Qualifying group [ESPN]. Beating Vietnam 4-0, as the result turned out, will surely help.
Talking of Japan, Daizen Maeda was benched for the Samurai Blue. That’s despite his recent goalscoring form for Celtic, and his J League accolades from 2021.
Still, Celtic fans can’t argue with the impact the Wizard of Oz is having for Australia. And their supporters are loving it.
Australia supporters wowed once again by Celtic star Tom Rogic
To say Rogic is a popular Australia player would be understating it.
The Wizard of Oz is known as a difference-maker. You don’t earn over 50 caps for the Socceroos for nothing. It also speaks volumes that both Graham Arnold and René Meulensteen offered lavish praise for the midfielder prior to kick-off.
On Twitter, the reaction to Rogic’s performance was understandable. With the massive audience of Australia fans watching, the number 10 put on a show.
Here are some of the best reactions:
The Australian has something of a fight on his hands when he comes back to Celtic, though. Matt O’Riley had a superb debut, while Reo Hatate has continually shone since coming to the club.
Still, Rogic is on absolute fire this season. It really is a joy to behold.
That’s for both club, and country.
