Bournemouth’s £25m transfer move confirms Celtic’s transfer path

Bournemouth are on the cusp of signing former Real Madrid wonderkid Alvaro Rodriguez for £25m this week.

Celtic were linked to the now Elche forward earlier this summer, but once Premier League money enters the race, the Glasgow giants are automatically excluded from transfer battles.

For Celtic, this move should sharpen the club’s focus on markets where they can still compete.

🤦‍♂️ Still no sign of an agreement for either of these two Celtic favourites to stay…

Celtic have to stop shopping in markets they cannot win

Looking at talent from one of Europe’s top five leagues shows ambition, but that is just a waste of time.

Once clubs with Premier League money come calling, naturally there is only going to be one winner.

The Athletic reports that Bournemouth are going to spend £25m on Rodriguez after his breakout season in La Liga.

Celtic’s recruitment model has never been about chasing this kind of talent, so every hour wasted scouting players like Rodriguez takes away from where the club should really be looking.

Celtic’s biggest transfer advantage has always been timing

Celtic have always thrived shopping in markets that are affordable and packed with hidden gems.

Players like Matt O’Riley, Reo Hatate, Daizen Maeda and Alistair Johnston all came to Celtic at points in their career before their stock rose.

They became valuable at Celtic, not to Celtic.

Bournemouth signing Alvaro Rodriguez isn’t bad news for Celtic. Pretending Celtic were ever realistically in the race is.

Celtic don’t need a bigger transfer budget. They need to stay several steps ahead of clubs like Bournemouth and spend it wisely, because once Premier League money arrives, the recruitment battle is already over.
