Quality. That’s the word that was overused by Brendan Rodgers as the Celtic boss looked forward to the January transfer window.
When I say overused, I mean that the Celtic boss should have kept that comment to himself and not made it public knowledge that he felt the players he has right now are not good enough.
Because that’s essentially what he did. Anyway, that’s an article for another day. There is a player who is approaching the end of his contract at Leicester City that Rodgers once labelled ‘world-class‘ that could be an ideal summer signing.
And at just 27 years old, is now entering his peak and could represent a significant sell-on value.
Wilfred Ndidi would be a superb signing for Celtic
The Nigerian international has been linked with Celtic in the past. Last summer it was thought Rodgers had designs on bringing his former midfield lieutenant to Glasgow after working closely with him at Leicester.
Indeed, Ndidi was part of the Leicester squad that delivered an FA Cup and the Community Shield under Rodgers’ tenure at the then Premier League side but is now in England’s second tier.
With 344 career appearances and 53 caps for Nigeria, Ndidi has that quality and experience that Rodgers has been searching for.
Currently out with a serious muscle injury [BBC], the Leicester midfielder’s contract expires at the end of June and Celtic should at least ask the question.
Ndidi’s current salary is £51k per week [SalarySport] so that could provide a stumbling block but getting a proven international who was once worth £15m for free, surely the Parkhead board could push the boat out to land the Nigerian.
As for Ndidi, working under Rodgers and the lure of playing Champions League football once more might be enough to convince him to lower his wage demands and play top-level football once again.
