There is no doubt that Tierney will be desperate to start the game. He’s a big Celtic fan, and one of his best moments of the season was his goal against RB Leipzig in the Europa League earlier this season.
Although he might want to start the game, the sensible thing for Brendan Rodgers to do would be to put him on the bench.
Tierney is too important a player for the Hoops to risk being thrown into the deep end against Valencia. He hasn’t played a minute of football since December due to a hip injury, and he needs some game time.
It looks like Jonny Hayes will start the game at left-back. That isn’t ideal, but it is still less of a gamble than starting Tierney.
If need be, the Hoops left-back can come on in the second-half of the game. But there’s no doubt it’s a risk Rodgers would rather not talk.
There is always the game against Kilmarnock on Sunday for Tierney to come back in. That vital league game is just as important as the Valencia match.
We don’t yet know how involved Tierney will be against Valencia, but the sensible thing to do would be to start him on the bench.
