Callum McGregor recent achieved an incredible statistic. It was revealed by Marca that McGregor played more minutes than any other player in world football last season.
That takes into account his games for Celtic and Scotland. McGregor played 69 appearances last season, totalling almost 6,000 minutes.
The 69 games in a season was also the third most played by a player last season.
Whilst McGregor deserves plenty of credit for his durability, he cannot be allowed to repeat this achievement this season.
Too many games could result in burnout

There is a real chance that the player could end up burned out if he ends up playing another long season for the Hoops.
That would not be good for McGregor, or for the club. Therefore, Celtic should look to rest McGregor as often as possible this season.
Ideal time to rest player

For example, an ideal time to rest the player looks to be after the second league game of the season, when the Hoops will be in Betfred Cup action.
Celtic have plenty of midfielders who can take McGregor’s place on that day. The rest would do him good, and he can concentrate on getting fit for Celtic’s games in Europe around that time.
Even if McGregor is limited to around 50 games this season it would help him as a player. He would still play in the majority of games, but be allowed to take a break. That should be commonplace at Celtic from now on.
