Callum McGregor has stopped short of publicly confirming that he will remain at Celtic, but the captain may just have offered the clearest indication yet that he sees his future at Parkhead.

The Celtic captain recently changed agents, fuelling speculation that his time at Parkhead could be about to come to an end.

Celtic supporters are still waiting for a definite answer, but McGregor’s latest comments point firmly towards him remaining at Parkhead.

Callum McGregor wants to build something special at Celtic

Speaking from Celtic’s pre-season camp in Portugal, McGregor was asked about the return of Martin O’Neill and the backroom staff who helped Celtic win last season’s double.

McGregor told The Courier, “All amazing guys who gave absolutely everything for the club and the cause last season.

“Especially second time round, it would have been easy to stay away, and they took that challenge.
“That tells you the type of people they are: they like a challenge, they face it head on.

“That’s exactly the way I am as well as a player and a person.

“So to see them back in the dugout and everybody back together (gives) that nice feeling that we can move forward and build something special.”

When asked how motivated he was after taking his major trophy count to 26 with last season’s double, the midfielder said: “That’s the job of a Celtic player, that you don’t get tired of winning.”

McGregor did not speak about Celtic as something he had completed or was preparing to leave behind. A player preparing to leave normally talks about what he has achieved. McGregor is talking about what Celtic can build next.

Callum McGregor still has the hunger to win at Celtic

McGregor is Celtic’s second-most decorated player with 26 winners’ medals to his name. The Celtic captain has basically completed Scottish football.

But here, he is talking about building that legacy and continuing to create memories at Celtic. Martin O’Neill has already said he wants to speak to the Hoops captain about his future.

Celtic supporters will still want a definite answer once McGregor and O’Neill hold their talks. For now, the captain is speaking about Celtic’s future as though he fully expects to be part of it.
