Veteran midfielder Daniele De Rossi will call time on his AS Roma career this summer. The Italian World Cup winner has played for the Serie A side since 2000 but will now pursue “a new adventure” following the end of his contract.

In 2016, the midfielder spoke to the Roma official website about his love for the city of Glasgow. As relayed by Football Italia, De Rossi said: “I put Glasgow in the top three as representatives of the Celtic culture, which I love.

“I saw it with the Nazionale (national team) albeit for a brief spell. Between the stadium and the hotel I experienced only a few bits of the city, but it remained in my mind.

“These are places I’d really like to go back to so I can get deeper into them, as they deserve.”

Should Celtic make their move

If De Rossi’s feelings remain the same, and there’s no reason to doubt why they wouldn’t, then Celtic should at least ask the question. The midfielder has made over 600 appearances for a world-renowned team. He’s played at the highest level for club and country and sampled some of the sport’s biggest occasions.

His presence would have a real positive impact on the changing room, not to mention the boost it would give us in Europe. At the age of 35 De Rossi is hardly finished either. He’s probably got another two or three seasons in him which would make a free transfer well worthwhile.

If he’s true about his love for Glasgow then Celtic may be an attractive proposition. It would make sense to make a move for him. What have we got to lose?
