Celtic hero Chris Sutton is spot on about Danny Rohl’s ego as Martin O’Neill comments haunt him

Chris Sutton has delivered a reality check to Rangers boss Danny Rohl, and the Celtic hero got it spot on.

Hoops fans will remember Rohl’s silly comments about Celtic not trying to beat Stuttgart in their Europa League tie back in February.

Indeed, those comments now look foolish after Celtic beat Rangers in the Scottish Cup, and Sutton has told Rohl to remember to stay in his lane from now on.

Sutton told Record Celtic, “Danny Rohl’s issue is he got a bit above his station, I think, and became a little bit too cocky with stuff.

Was the decision to rule Daizen Maeda’s goal vs Rangers really so clear cut?

“You could see what Martin O’Neill thought of the comments about how Celtic should have played against Stuttgart, and they wouldn’t have gone down well with Martin, who kept his own counsel.

“I just think maybe Danny Rohl started to believe his own hype a little bit. I don’t know why he got involved in the Luke McCowan situation.

“If you’re a Rangers fan, you think, well, ‘You haven’t won anything yet, Danny. Don’t worry about what’s going on at Celtic and who Martin should be playing in, and what the goalkeeping situation should be at Celtic. Concern yourself with your own team’.

The fact that Rohl decided to get involved Celtic’s affairs shows just how wet the Rangers boss is behind his ears, compared to the experience of Martin O’Neill, who brushed the comments off with class and grace.

Celtic hero digs at Rangers’ European record under Rohl

Celtic progressed to the play-off stage of the Europa League as Rangers finished fifth from bottom in the UEFA competition.

Rohl achieved one draw and one win in six games while O’Neill was guiding Celtic to wins over the likes of Feyenoord.

And Sutton said Rohl should shut his mouth about Celtic considering Rangers’ dismal results under his tenure.

Sutton continued, “Let’s get it right. Danny Rohl talking about Martin O’Neill in Europe and how Celtic should have played. Danny Rohl’s record in Europe was rotten.

“However, he’s done domestically, his record was rotten. I don’t think that would have gone down well with the Rangers support. Those two games at Ibrox, I thought Danny Rohl was thinking, here we go, I fancy this.

“And I said it many times, Glasgow, it’s all about who comes out on top. It’s all about winning. And I just think maybe Danny’s ego has been checked a little bit with what’s happened.

“And I would hope from his point of view, he realises now it’s better to do your talking on the pitch and after you’ve won something rather than spout off early, which he has done. And that’s come back to bite him a little bit.”

Sutton has got it bang on the money and we would guess Rohl knows this too. The Rangers boss post-match Celtic interview showed a man who was really despondent and, in truth, one who knows he has bitten off a little bit more than he can chew.

Celtic have always looked to do their talking on the pitch and the club’s unprecedented success has proven that.

As for Rangers, the more talk off the park, the more this breeds success for Celtic because there is only one club who has the ability to back up their achievements, and it’s not Rangers.
