Celtic must follow last season’s lead by making first signing a statement of intent

The reaction to Neil Lennon’s appointment as Celtic manager has been underwhelming to say the least.

Whilst there is no doubt fans are thankful for the job Lennon done as interim boss, they would have prepared a bigger name, such as former boss Brendan Rodgers.

Still, Lennon is the manager now, and the fans will get behind him. However, the Hoops could get the fans back onside with a major signing, similar to last season.

Statement made by signing

Celtic’s first signing last season was Odsonne Edouard. It was a statement of intent. The Hoops had broken their transfer record to sign a player who ended up scoring 22 goals last season.

A similar blockbuster signing this summer would help to ease the doubts which surround both Lennon’s appointment and the club’s transfer strategy overall.

Now, it is unlikely that the Hoops will break their transfer record again this summer. That does not mean that a big money signing won’t be made.

Player would need to justify outlay

If the Hoops paid, for example eight million pound for a player it would be a serious statement of intent. Of course, the player would have to be as good as Edouard has been to justify that outlay of cash.

It remains to be seen who the Hoops splash the cash on first this summer. It has to be said though, a big money purchase could be just what the fans need to get on track with the Lennon appointment.
