Celtic players’ passionate reaction to St Johnstone flashpoint was a big moment

The Celtic supporters have been lauding the reaction of the players to the heated clash between Cameron Carter-Vickers and St Johnstone’s Chris Kane yesterday.

Kane incredibly avoided a red card despite having a kick at the on-loan Spurs man before throwing a right hand his way. This all came in front of referee Nick Walsh, who, outrageously, decided to book both players.

But more importantly, it was the first sign we’ve seen this season of the Celtic players defending each other in the face of adversity or over-the-top challenges.

Both Anthony Ralston and Tom Rogic stormed in to confront Kane with nothing but pure rage on their face. Carter-Vickers, meanwhile, looked ready for a fight as he tried to get in the St Johnstone man’s face.

Other teammates would soon join the stramash whilst Joe Hart ran about 50 yards out of his goal to try and calm CCV down. It was a major sign of the togetherness in the squad – something that’s clearly developed over the last couple of months.

Think back to the first game of the season at Tynecastle. Andy Halliday launches a ridiculous challenge on Callum McGregor. The only goal being to hurt the Celtic man as he drove away from him.

There wasn’t a single soul in the Celtic team that went charging in to confront the player. Nobody putting pressure on the referee to punish Halliday and stand up for their teammate. It was, quite clearly, a squad trying to navigate its early days together.

But now you’re looking at these incidents and seeing a different Celtic side. One that’s united and will back their teammates up. It’s massive for squads to have these moments and just as big for supporters to see it in action.

Yesterday’s challenge, if you want to call it that, from Kane was ludicrous and clearly born out of frustration. But even so, the Celtic reaction to it was undoubtedly satisfying.

And it’s something that certainly pleased supporters yesterday too. Here’s a look at some of the reaction to the incident on Twitter:
