Celtic should attempt to make Elyounoussi transfer permanent in January

It seems like only yesterday that the ‘summer’ transfer window slammed shut. Of course, due to the pandemic the transfer window didn’t close until October. However, before we know it the January transfer window will be open.

On the face of it Celtic looked to have had a very successful transfer window. However, not every signing has worked out so far. One that has though is the return of Mohamed Elyounoussi on a second loan spell from Southampton.

Already in double figures for the season

He has been excellent for the Hoops, and has scored 10 goals in 18 games, already beating the tally he scored last season.

At the moment we don’t know where the player’s future lies after the end of the season. He is due to return to Southampton. However, so important has Elyounoussi been to Celtic this season that the Hoops should be asking Southampton a bold transfer question this summer.

They should be asking the Premier League side if there is anyway that the deal could be made permanent either in January, or in the summer.

That might take a lot of money, or even a deal involving cash with a player moving to Southampton. Of course, Southampton and the player will have a big say in the matter.

No harm in asking

Indeed, there is no guarantee that Elyounoussi will want to sign for the Hoops on a permanent deal. However, there is no harm in asking. What a boost it would be for Celtic if the player agreed to stay at the club, and the Hoops could announce it in January.

Neil Lennon would no doubt love to have the player in Glasgow for another few years. Elyounoussi has become a focal point of the side since he arrived at the club, but this season in particular.

Therefore, Celtic should ask the question about Elyounoussi’s permanent availability in January. The answer might turn out to be one that gladdens the heart of every Celtic fan.

In other news, Napoli’s Amir Rrahmani said he turned down the chance to sign for Celtic last January.
