Celtic should avoid appointing Will Still at all costs

Will Still has been tipped as an option to become the new Celtic manager.

The Hoops are still on the hunt to find Brendan Rodgers’ long-term replacement and the list of candidates has taken them far and wide.

67 Hail Hail understands that fan favourite Kjetil Knutsen is interested in the role, but would want to see out the Champions League campaigm with Bodo/Glimt first.

Meanwhile, TalkSPORT presenter Hugh Woozencroft suggested that the Bhoys should be on the phone to Still, who was recently sacked by Southampton.

He said: “Will Still will make a very good manager at Championship level. Yes, there were undoubted poor performances but there were also some very good ones, where, had Saints taken their chances – it would have at least given him more time.

“If I’m Celtic, I’m on the phone in the morning.”

While that may seem like an option, it is something that Celtic shouldn’t even think about entertaining.

Will Still was sacked by Southampton for poor performances

Before his ill-fated stint at Southampton, Still has earned a reputation for becoming one of the brightest young managers in Europe.

Famously paraded on social media for not even having the correct qualifications, resulting in Reims receiving a financial penalty, the 33-year-old performed brilliantly with Reims and then Lens.

Despite links to Premier League clubs in the past, the young boss decided to take on the challenge of rebuilding Southampton, who were one of the worst sides in England last season.

That didn’t go to plan and he was relieved of his duties with the Saints 19th in the second tier of English football.

Linking Still to Celtic is eerily similar to the path that Russell Martin took when he was dismissed by Southampton, ultimately ending up at Rangers.

Celtic cannot afford to follow that same model. As proved, it doesn’t work, and reputation only gets you so far.

The Hoops need instant results and there are plenty of other candidates who are more qualified and better-suited to the role.

Wilfried Nancy could be an option after Columbus Crew’s MLS play-off exit and may be tempted by a new project.

Kieran McKenna has also been linked to the role, but seems committed to Ipswich Town for now, and Robbie Keane also remained coy.

Some of those may not be the perfect option, but all would certainly be better than bringing Still to Glasgow.
