Celtic should not buy any players from Scottish clubs in January

Celtic’s business in the January transfer market will certainly be interesting. The Hoops will be looking to add players who will be able to add something to the squad, to help them in the title race.

It will be interesting to examine the markets that Neil Lennon and Nick Hammond explore. The Hoops have for the most part avoided the Scottish market recently, with a few exceptions. They should avoid the market completely this time around.

In the last transfer window, the Hoops made two attempts to sign Scottish players, but only one was successful. The player who joined was Greg Taylor from Kilmarnock, and the player who didn’t was David Turnbull from Motherwell.

Recent signing hasn’t been a complete success

If we examine Taylor first, it is hard to gauge if he has been a success or not, but so the answer is probably trending towards ‘no’. He hasn’t featured that often for the Hoops, making only 10 apperances, and at times has found himself as third choice left-back.

Few fans would have expected that when the player joined the club. As for Turnbull, his protracted move fell through due to a knee injury, and he hasn’t played for Motherwell in the first-half of the season. That was a pity, as he could have added something to the Hoops first-team.

Those two experiences, one player arguably failing to live up to expectations, and one player not coming to the club due to injury, might well influence Celtic’s thinking for the transfer window.

Club could get overcharged for players

There is a good chance that Celtic could well get overcharged for players that are in Scotland as well. Other Scottish clubs could see that the Hoops want a player. Knowing the situation that the club is in, raise the price for the player.

That is something that Celtic should look to avoid. For all the reasons outlined above, the Hoops should avoid shopping in the Scottish market in January.
