FC Metz are already prepared to move on Jonathan Fischer after just one season, and with the Danish goalkeeper attracting interest across England, Scotland and Italy.
With Viljami Sinisalo now regarded as Celtic’s number one goalkeeper, the retirement of Kasper Schmeichel opens up an opportunity for a goalkeeper with ambition to join the Parkhead club.
And after Metz were relegated from Ligue 1 last season, the sale of Fischer has been agreed and it’s one Celtic should take a closer look at.
Should Viljami Sinisalo be the long-term replacement for Kasper Schmeichel?
Celtic and the Jonathan Fischer opportunity emerging in the transfer market
According to Tipsbladet, FC Metz have officially opened the door for the sale of Fischer, with the player and club both agreed on a summer exit.
The report says clubs from Scotland, England and Italy are listed among suitable admirers and with Celtic in need of another goalkeeper, could Fischer offer competition to Sinisalo?
The 24-year-old only arrived in France a year ago in a €3m move from Fredrikstad after producing 13 clean sheets in a strong campaign.
That form attracted the attention of Metz and a €3m move soon followed. However, after a difficult first season in France after relegation from the top flight, Fischer is set to move on.
Why Fischer’s form at Metz should not deter Celtic
Fischer’s stats in his first season at Metz are mixed, especially as they battled relegation all season.
Here is how the Dane’s Fotmob stats compare to his successful time at Fredrikstad in Norway:
Fredrikstad
- Save %: 72.6%
- Goals conceded: 1.18
- Goals prevented: +0.03
- Clean sheets: 0.29 per 90
Metz
- Save %: 62.7%
- Goals conceded: 2.14
- Goals prevented: -0.23
- Clean sheets: 0.19 per 90
Now, we are not suggesting that Fischer is the answer to Celtic’s goalkeeping problem, but at 24 and Ligue 1 experience, and having cup-winning success at Fredrikstad, the Parkhead club should at least take a look.
