Imagine being an American Celtic supporter right now, reacting to the USMNT’s snub of Cameron Carter-Vickers.
On the one hand, you’d be delighted. The defender has been a stand-out, a star for Celtic. On form, though, it’s somewhat bizarre that Gregg Berhalter opted against picking the USA-capped Celtic centre-back.
Celtic fans have acted with utter relief to the Carter-Vickers news. Although, a penny for the thoughts of USA-based Hoops fanatics would be fascinating at this moment in time. A bedrock of the best defence in the Scottish Premiership, Carter-Vickers will be absolutely vital for Celtic, there’s no doubt.

Especially with Celtic facing Dundee United, Hearts and Rangers in the time-frame he could’ve been away on international duty.
Instead, Berhalter picked formerly Celtic-linked Mark McKenzie, now of Genk, as well as Brooks Lennon, Chris Richards, and a range of defenders from the MLS and further afield [USMNT].
Earlier today, Chris Sutton described Carter-Vickers as the league’s best defender, the “glue” whose absence would’ve been a nightmare for Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou [Record]. It’s hard to argue with that assessment, and while Celtic fans are jubilant he’s staying around late this month.
Interesting decisions, no doubt. And the reaction online told its own story.
Contrasting emotions for Celtic and USA fans over Cameron Carter-Vickers
Of course, it’s not all good news for Celtic from an international call-ups perspective. Tom Rogic will miss important games, while Daizen Maeda has been called up, with Kyogo Furuhashi injured.
However, any potential gloom over our defence has been put off with the Carter-Vickers news. As if it needed repeating, Celtic fans are delighted.
Carter-Vickers received some lofty praise online. Not a call-up, but it’s not nothing, either.
Here are some of the best reactions we found online:
It’s not all call-up gloom around Celtic Park, then.
If Cameron Carter-Vickers can maintain the form we’ve seen thus far, then it’s a huge bonus for Celtic. And although Ange Postecoglou wants his players called up, he’ll surely be feeling the relief, too.
