Celtic defender Kieran Tierney was drafted in as a second-half substitution during Scotland’s 3-0 defeat to Brazil at the World Cup.
Scotland were soundly beaten by Brazil and Tierney was at least one of the positives to take from the game as the Celtic defender shone in a disappointing night in Miami.
That is why one of Tierney’s ratings stands out for all the wrong reasons, especially when one media outlet appears to completely contradict itself about the Celtic star’s performance.

Celtic supporters saw Kieran Tierney’s Scotland impact
Tierney replaced Andy Robertson at half-time and immediately gave Scotland more drive down the left flank.
The Celtic defender barely put a foot wrong, which is remarkable considering how badly Scotland’s collapse against Brazil was.
Most of the media ratings reflected how Tierney positively impacted the game for Scotland, but the Daily Record will leave Celtic supporters scratching their heads.
- The Scotsman (5/10): Came on at the break for Robertson and fared well.
- ESPN (6/10): Came on for Robertson for the second half and was lively going forward. His delivery into the box created issues for Brazil and on another day, would have come away with an assist.
- TNT Sports (7/10): On for Robertson at half-time, Tierney made a really positive impact. He linked up well with McGinn and set up McTominay for a good chance early in the second half with a brilliant cross into the box.
- Daily Record (4/10): Took over at left-back from Robertson and terrific cross for McTominay to head at Alisson. Was purposeful down the Scotland left.
- LiveScore (6.5/10): Half-time substitute provided attacking impetus; driving run won foul for Danilo’s booking.
Celtic supporters should question one Kieran Tierney rating
The Daily Record’s rating is where Celtic fans will question what game they watched. Not because of the 4/10 mark itself, but because the comments describe a performance that sounds much better than their rating suggests.
A player credited with creating Scotland’s best chance and being a threat is not usually associated with one of the lowest ratings on the pitch.
Tierney was one of Scotland’s brighter performers during a bleak and disappointing collapse against Brazil. The majority of the match reports recognised that.
Scotland’s defeat was grim viewing, but Tierney looked lively, got Scotland up the pitch and created one of their best openings of the night.
That’s why Celtic fans will look at the Daily Record’s 4/10 rating and scorn it.
