Charlie Mulgrew return to Celtic would be no surprise

It seems that should Neil Lennon become the next permanent Celtic manager, he would like to bring some old Bhoys back to the club.

The Scottish Sun is reporting that Gary Hooper is on Lennon’s list of transfer targets should he get the permanent job.

Should that be the case, it would not be surprising if another former Hoops player is on Lennon’s radar. That player is Blackburn’s Charlie Mulgrew.

Playing well in the Championship

Mulgrew has done well at Championship side Blackburn. He scored 10 goals in 31 games last season for the Ewood Park club.

He has also played at centre-back for Rovers, which is interesting when you consider that the Hoops need to sign some new defenders to replace the departing Filip Benkovic and Dedryck Boyata.

It should be remembered that Mulgrew played probably the best football of his career under Neil Lennon. So good were his performances in 2011-12 that he was named Scotland’s player of the year.

Experienced player

Mulgrew is now at the veteran stage of his career compared to then. But Lennon might feel that Mulgrew is worth buying.

He has the experience at the back which Celtic will be losing when Benkovic and Boyata leave. He is also used to winning trophies with the Hoops, which can only be a bonus.

At the moment only Hooper has been linked with a return to the Hoops. But it would not be a shock to see Mulgrew mentioned in dispatches sooner rather than later.
