Charlie Nicholas comes up with the most ridiculous Ange Postecoglou Celtic comparison yet
Charlie Nicholas has today won the award for the most ludicrous and premature Ange Postecoglou comparison yet as he compared him to former Hoops boss Ronny Deila.
Postecoglou is in the midst of a poor run of form as he struggles to get his best XI on the park. He hasn’t been helped by an injury crisis that has ripped his best players from his team.
It comes only weeks after Postecoglou was on a five-game winning run and quickly winning over doubters. Now, he finds himself in a new challenge as he looks to halt the slide in form and get Celtic back to winning ways.
Not that he’s being helped by the so-called “pro-Celtic pundits” in the media. Today, Nicholas has moved to pile the pressure on him by stating that he’s, bizarrely, the “new Ronny Deila”.
Speaking via his Scottish Daily Express column [print edition, 28/09, page 57], Nicholas said: “Ange Postecoglou looks to me to be the next Ronny Deila. I am not sure Postecoglou realised how big Celtic are before he came in. I believe he has missed a pitch – I think Ange thought he would just come in here and his playing style would get him over the line, no problem. But it’s not about style, it’s about winning.
“Ronny came in and thought ‘I will get the players really fit’. He then brought in John Collins to help him and it got results but, in the long-term, teams were getting closer to Celtic and they had to bring in Brendan Rodgers.

“People are casting him as the next Tony Mowbray. In Tony’s defence, he was told before he took the job there were funds but they never produced. Tony was then left exposed and what followed was Neil Lennon’s first spell at the club. I am not saying Ange is being exposed but he is not making the best of things.”
Far too early to hit out with unfair Celtic comparisons
Sure it makes for a good headline and all the rest of it. We know Nicholas isn’t one for keeping the head when there’s a whiff of negativity about the club. But even so, comparing Postecoglou to Deila? Give the man a break.
Deila didn’t have the current injury crisis to deal with when he came in. He also didn’t have to completely overhaul the squad either.
Not to mention the boardroom at the time was in a stable position too. Celtic are lacking in so many departments that the club is in a total mess at the minute.
Sure, you can say Postecoglou and Deila have similar phiolosophies. Both believe in a high-intensity pressing game. They also both value extreme fitness levels too. But that’s where the comparisons end. To label Ange “the new Ronny Deila” is extremely unfair.
And as for the Tony Mowbray stuff – who on earth is making that link? Outside of a Daily Record article last week, nobody has been pushing that particular comparison. Why Nicholas is so desperate to relate the manager to failed gaffers of the past is anyone’s guess.
But for now we need to be getting behind the man. His job is hard enough without his own turning against him. Not that Nicholas having a dig is much of a surprise.
