Former Celtic legend Chris Sutton has urged the Hoops to make a move for Aberdeen’s Scott McKenna in the summer.
The Hoops had a bid for the player turned down last August. Now Sutton has recommended that the Bhoys return with a second bid.
“Best centre-back in the country”
“And while Aberdeen fans may not thank me for it, Celtic should buy the best centre-back in the country this season in Scott McKenna” he told the Daily Record.
“He may not be a ball-playing defender but the good thing is he knows it and keeps it simple.”
Celtic will certainly be signing at least one centre-back this summer. Filip Benkovic is set to return to Leicester City and Dedryck Boyata’s contract expires at the end of the season.
Therefore, it is imperative that some new blood is brought in for that most vital position.
Two stumbling blocks
The stumbling blocks could be twofold: Celtic might not want to meet the Dons’ asking price, and Neil Lennon might not want to sign the player.
Aberdeen will be wanting big money for the player, perhaps around eight to nine million pound. That might be too much money for the Hoops to spend on the player.
It was Brendan Rodgers who tried to buy McKenna in August, there is no guarantee that Lennon is as big a fan of the player as the former Hoops boss was.
It will be interesting to see if the Hoops act on Sutton’s suggestion. He has been a stand-out for the Dons this season, and would do well for the Hoops. Only time will tell where his future lies.
