Former Celtic player Davie Provan has claimed the Hoops ‘look vulnerable right now’, writing in his regular Scottish Sun column.
Fresh off a 6-0 victory over Ross County in the Scottish Premiership weekend, Provan’s Sunday column lays out reasons why there might be concern around Celtic Park right now.
Questioning the mentality and hunger of long-serving players, the Sky Sports co-commentator also believes the Hoops are looking a bit weak even in the wake of decent summer recruitment.
As quoted by The Scottish Sun, the former midfielder said: “Tierney has gone, McGregor was keen to speak to Leicester in the summer, Griffiths is trying to rediscover himself while Brown is on borrowed time.
“These players have flogged themselves for the club to maintain Celts’ dominance. But do they have the same desire they had when chasing their first medal?
“By the time Rodgers left for Leicester, he admitted the team had gone backwards. And while Lennon declared himself happy with this summer’s transfer business, Celtic look vulnerable right now.”
He’s underestimating the Hoops
If you look at our results this season there’s not much cause for concern. The qualifying defeat to Cluj was a disaster and the loss to Livingston was hugely disappointing.
However, outside of these matches we’ve actually had a fantastic start to the season. Sure, there was a draw away to Hibs too, but that’s a venue we’ve consistently failed to win at in the league over the last few campaigns.
A draw away to Rennes and a revenge victory over the Romanian champions is proof enough we’re operating at a good level.
We also went back to the top of the table with a 6-0 victory prior to Provan’s column being printed.
It’s a bit bizarre to question the winning desire of a team that has won a three trebles in a row. We didn’t look any less motivated last season to achieve that, especially when Lennon came into the club.
Our new signings have also settled well into the team. Players such as Christopher Jullien and Mohamed Elyounoussi are already proving vital.
Far from looking vulnerable, we’re in good shape heading into the rest of the season.
