The last six weeks for Celtic captain Scott Brown have been amongst the most intriguing of his career.
He was dismal in the Hoops’ 1-0 loss to Rangers in December.
However, he bounced back with a series of good displays culminating with a goal in the 5-0 win over St Johnstone.
In between all this, he signed a new two-year deal with the Hoops.
The latest chapter saw the player turn in an exceptionally poor performance in the 2-0 loss to Valencia.
The nature of Brown’s performance has to throw up doubts about his ability to still perform at the highest level.
Brown’s display seemed to set the tone for the Hoops.
He conspired to give the ball away or pass it out of play in a spell in the first-half which seemed to drain confidence from the Hoops.
That invited Valencia on top of the Hoops, and Brown was powerless to do anything about it.
The two displays against Rangers and Valencia in the past six weeks must be concerning. Both for Brown and for Brendan Rodgers.
Brown looks increasingly like he is unable to play at the highest level. Like he used to regularly do in the past.
The next test for the Hoops skipper comes in a must win match at Kilmarnock on Sunday. It is the sort of game you would expect him to dominate.
If he fails to drive the Hoops on to victory, questions really do need to be asked about his place in the team.
