Eddie Howe would have Celtic fans on board from the start and that could be crucial

Celtic fans are pretty hard to please. There’s no point in trying to shy away from that.

We have brilliant knowledge of the club, extraordinary passion and always want the absolute best for the institution we are obsessed with.

As is clear to see this season, we aren’t shy about voicing our displeasure either, even when locked out of the stadium.

By my reckoning, the board in place at Celtic Park actually have a pretty tough task to replace Neil Lennon. It’s an appointment they can’t afford to get wrong. It’s a decision that could so easily go wrong.

Names such as Roy Keane, Steve Clarke and Thierry Henry have been linked to the vacant post over the last couple of months – none of which have particularly inspired positive reaction.

However, today, as reports heavily link Eddie Howe with a move to Glasgow, excitement is returning to the support.

The BBC, Sky Sports, Daily Record and Scottish Sun are all reporting that the club are in advanced talks with the former Bournemouth man.

It’s been said he’s even already met incoming CEO Dominic McKay and prominent shareholder Dermot Desmond. They appear to be the king-makers in this scenario.

Eddie Howe can help unify Celtic fans

I’m not saying Howe will be a universally popular choice. He will obviously have his detractors – that goes with the territory. However, it would also undoubtedly be a largely unifying appointment that brings supporters back into the club’s arms.

That could be absolutely crucial for any new project kicking off. If the fans aren’t on board from the start it will hamper season ticket sales, as well as immediately putting undue pressure on a new manager.

The message coming from the club this season as ten-in-a-row slipped away was unity. The problem was that supporters were buying what was being sold by senior officials.

A Howe appointment at least offers hope to beleaguered supporters. For now, that could be enough to get the majority back on board and parting with their cash.

A quick look at social media today points to a very excited bunch of fans, as you can see below.

Let’s hope the club can follow through…
