The return of Emilio Izaguirre was one that delighted Celtic fans.

The left-back, a favourite of the fans, returned in August after a year spent playing in Saudi Arabia.

He was originally to be used as cover for Kieran Tierney.

But Tierney has been out injured since December, and Izaguirre has taken his place in the side.

That was until the 1-0 loss to Rangers in December.

Izaguirre was out of the team and Callum McGregor filled in at make-shift left-back.

The change didn’t work, and Celtic went down to a poor defeat.

Izaguirre has started every Celtic match since that defeat though, perhaps an admission from Brendan Rodgers that he was wrong to drop the veteran defender.

At the moment, with the transfer window set to close in a day’s time, Celtic have not yet added another left-back to the squad.

If that situation remains when the window closes, Izaguirre will continue to be first-choice until Tierney returns.

Izaguirre has earned that right, as for the most part he has been an excellent player in his two spells at the club.

If he needs to start in the upcoming Europa League games against Valencia, he is more than capable of turning in a decent performance.

He might not be the player he once was, but Izaguirre still has a role to play for Celtic in the weeks to come.
