There are many players who will be linked with Celtic during the summer transfer window. One of the most unlikely to emerge was Everton’s veteran defender Phil Jagielka.

The Scottish Sun reported that the Hoops were interested in the player and that they had also tried to bring him to Glasgow in January.

However, the Hoops later confirmed to the Daily Record that they were not interested in the player. Fans will be relieved that Jagielka doesn’t seem to be on the list of transfer targets for the club.

Whilst on his day he was a very good defender, he has struggled to get into the Everton side in recent times. He has plenty of experience. But having not played regularly in the last year the move seems too much of a gamble for the Hoops.

Focus on youth

That is what the Hoops support would like to see. They would rather see a young defender – like Kristoffer Ajer – be given a chance.

Signing veteran players is not a long-term solution to any problem at a club. Therefore, the fact that the Hoops have denied interest in Jagielka is a good thing for the club.
