Fuming Czech Republic boss Miroslav Koubek’s Tomas Cvancara snub is great news for Celtic

Tomas Cvancara will not be selected for the Czech Republic after national boss Miroslav Koubek reveals what the Celtic striker told him about his priorities this season.

The on-loan striker is trying to revive his career at Celtic after Cvancara made a winter transfer move from SC Freiburg.

With just one goal to his name so far, Cvancara was instrumental in Celtic’s win over Motherwell and his performances have been decent enough to merit a national call-up.

But it seems the Celtic striker has made his feelings perfectly clear where his loyalties lie after Koubek criticised Cvancara for telling him the national side ‘is not a priority’.

Has Tomas Cvancara done enough to convince you that he deserves a permanent contract?

Miroslav Koubek says Celtic’s Tomas Cvancara is ‘not a priority’

In what seems like a tit-for-tat statement, Koubek has relayed a message to Cvancara that if the Czech Republic is not a priority for the Celtic striker, then the feeling is mutual.

Asked why the striker was denied a recall, Czech Republic boss Miroslav Koubek told the Daily Record, “We considered what awaits us and what mentality is suitable for this game. Cvancara expressed himself that the national team is not a priority for him.

“As a coach, I say that it is not a priority for me to take a player for whom the national team is not a priority.”

Despite the negativity of the Czech Republic boss’s words, Cvancara’s international snub is superb news for Celtic.

With the number of injury issues Celtic have right now, the risk of another is removed while Cvancara gets to focus solely on winning the title and the Scottish Cup for Celtic.

Martin O’Neill will be happy that he will not lose another player to an international break and will also get to continue to work with Cvancara on the training pitch to prepare for the title run-in.

Tomas Cvancara’s Czech Republic career so far

To date, Cvancara has eight caps for the Czech Republic having scored just one goal for his national side.

The 25-year-old made his international debut back in March 2023 where he scored in a 3-1 win over Poland in a Euro 2024 qualifier.

Cvancara has not scored since and last played for the Czech Republic back in October 2024 when the Celtic striker came on for the final minute of a 4-1 win over Albania.

The tall striker was also an unused sub in a 1-1 draw with Ukraine in the game after the Albania win, but it seems another call-up may be a long way off now.
