Hyunjun Yang shone recently against elite opposition; massively exciting from a Celtic perspective

New Celtic signing Hyunjun Yang already has experience of playing against some top players.

The 21-year-old was confirmed as Celtic‘s third signing of the summer yesterday, signing a five-year contract after moving from Gangwon FC.

Yang is a tricky and direct winger who is likely to have the Celtic support on the edge of their seat when he plays for the team.

Given that he is still young and has only previously played in South Korea, you may have come to the conclusion that he won’t have faced anything near elite opposition.

But Yang has come up against some a top team already in his short career, and excelled too.

In July 2022, he featured for Team K League — a squad made up of the best players in the Korean top-flight — in a friendly encounter against Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs won an enthralling encounter 6-3, but several K League players made a name for themselves on the big stage.

Yang was one such player. Despite not starting the match, he arrived on to the pitch during the second-half and earned plaudits for his fearless, direct running style.

Spurs TV commentator Rob Daly described Yang as “the best player on the day” in a K League United YouTube video.

The K League themselves thought the winger had shone against Antonio Conte’s men.

K League United said in an article that Yang’s performance had “arguably stole the show.”

Further to that, a compilation clip of his best runs from the match has been doing the rounds on Twitter. You only have to search ‘Yang’ and ‘Spurs’ to find that.

Against some illustrious Premier League names our new signing had shown no fear. That is pretty exciting with our upcoming European fixtures on the horizon.

We will be underdogs for the majority of our Champions League group stage fixtures and it will be up to the players to show no fear against some of the continent’s best.

A pre-season friendly may be a little different from a packed Celtic Park under the lights. But Yang has already shown he has what it takes to take on some big dogs.
