Celtic could be making changes at right-back once more. The Daily Mail is reporting that the Hoops have ‘opened talks’ with Sheffield United about signing their right-back George Baldock.
Should the Hoops sign Baldock, that will raise a question that will need to be answered: what does that mean for Mikael Lustig?
Free to talk to other teams
Lustig’s contract at Celtic has expired, and he is free to talk to other teams. However, Celtic boss Neil Lennon recently confirmed that he would like to give Lustig a new deal, and that he has begun talks with the veteran right-back.
However, you would imagine that it Baldock joins the Hoops he will become the new first choice right-back.
May want regular football
In that case, Lustig may decide to move on from the Hoops. He might well want to play regular football in the last few years of his career.
If Celtic are purchasing a new right-back, that looks less likely to happen. Interestingly, Lustig saw off the last challenge of the player who was supposed to take his place in the first-team, Jeremy Toljan.
But things have changed since then. The most important being that Lustig’s contract has expired. Lusitg’s future will need to be decided soon, as the Hoops return to competitive action next month.
Only Lustig himself knows where he will play next season. Perhaps the Baldock interest will encourage him to reveal his decision.
