Kris Boyd’s laughable Scottish Sun column today has made one thing clear – it’s deeply annoying for some in Scotland that Celtic aren’t in utter crisis.
The former Rangers player devotes his entire rant to how it’s so unfair that Celtic aren’t being criticised in the same manner as the Ibrox club.
Elsewhere, a prominent journalist used his newspaper column this morning to suggest Celtic supporters backing the team with applause and songs off the pitch at the Bernabeu was ‘bizarre’, apparently not understanding why the vast majority of fans remain full-throated in their support of Ange Postecoglou and his players.
The sheer thirst to lump the Bhoys in with Rangers’ miserable Champions League group-stage campaign, the worst in the tournament’s entire history, and the subsequent anger of their fans is clear to see.
Anyone with eyes could see the difference in approach. In fact, you could tell before a ball was kicked given Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s insistence from the off that the Ibrox side couldn’t compete.
You won’t find a Celtic fan anywhere that isn’t disappointed with the way our six group games turned out. Everyone recognises there were deficiencies, missed chances and frustrating phases of play. Yet everyone fully understands where the manager is trying to bring us.
There’s a vision and an end goal that has been clearly communicated. And it’s not just empty words, you can see it unfolding on the pitch. This is why there is buy-in.
If we take Postecoglou at his word, he sees the Champions League task as a long-term one that requires consistent focus and smart decisions throughout the year, not just for an eight-week period.
Are we expected to just throw him under the bus because these games didn’t go our way, despite clear signs of improvement and progress over the last 16 months? Of course not, that’s absurd.
Celtic remains a unified front at the moment, and rightly so.
I realise that this is inconvenient for some pundits and journalists as it only strengthens our lot in comparison to chaos across the city, but maybe they should look for answers at their own end before trying to drag us down to their level.
