James Forrest looks like he could probably do with a rest when Celtic take on Hamilton Accies this weekend.

The winger has been a virtual ever present for Neil Lennon’s side so far this season – starting all but two of our 13 matches this term. In the main, he has been terrific. Forrest has netted six goals and created numerous more as the Hoops went three clear at the top of the Premiership and qualified for the group stage of the Europa League.

However, his last two performances for club and country have been far more subdued. The 28-year-old was by far the most quiet Celtic player in the terrific victory at Ibrox a week ago. He was equally as unproductive in Scotland’s defeat to Russia on Friday night, to the extent that he was hauled off just after the hour mark.

Forrest looks like he could do with a rest

Those recent displays are only noticeable because of the incredible consistency Forrest has shown over the past 18 months. Given that he played more minutes of football than any Celtic star – bar Callum McGregor – last season, and that this season has already started in a similar vein, you just feel he could do with a rest.

The problem for Lennon is that he doesn’t have any other right-wingers that he fully trusts. In an ideal world, Marian Shved would have been able to take the strain off Forrest. However, the Ukrainian is taking a little longer to adapt to life in Scotland and isn’t considered ready yet as a result.

With Hamilton to come on Saturday, you really feel that Lennon could afford to change things up and still get the result required. Lewis Morgan could be an option to come in on the right-wing while Mohamed Elyounoussi has occasionally played there too.

For the sake of Forrest’s form in the coming weeks, you just feel an extended rest could be of benefit.
