James Forrest's league cup final record should concern Hampden rivals
When you look at the Celtic players who should concern Rangers and can be match-winners in Sunday’s Betfred Cup Final, a lot of focus will no doubt be placed on Ryan Christie. That is understandable.
After all, he has scored 16 goals so far this season, and is probably in the best form of his career. However, there is another player who the Ibrox side should be fearful of, and his incredible Betfred/League Cup Final pedigree is the reason for that.
Scored in three league cup finals
That player is James Forrest. In his time at Celtic, Forrest has won four league cup winners’ medals. Incredibly enough, he has scored in three of those finals. He scored in the 2-0 win over Dundee United in 2015, the 3-0 win over Aberdeen in 2016, and the 2-0 win over Motherwell in 2017.
Last season ‘s win against Aberdeen is the first time he has played in a league cup wining side for the Hoops and not scored in the final.
When you look at Forrest’s form this season, he looks more than capable of adding to his league cup final goal tally. This season, he has scored 13 goals, and has been in excellent form during Celtic’s 11 game winning run.
At one time he struggled in derbies, but not now
At one stage it could be said that Forrest struggled in Glasgow derbies. He did find it hard to make an impact in some of them that is true.
However, that all came to an end when he scored in Celtic’s 5-0 derby win which clinched the league title in 2018. He then followed that up with the winning goal in Celtic’s 2-1 win March, which all but sealed eight in a row for the Hoops.
All that is missing from his time at Celtic is a cup final winning goal against Rangers. You would not bet against him putting that right in the upcoming Betfred Cup Final. Rangers should be wary of facing the league cup final expert.
