Jeremie Frimpong should be given another Celtic first-team chance

One of the many highlights of the season for Celtic fans this season so far was the debut performance of Jeremie Frimpong.

The summer signing from Manchester City has joined the Hoops this summer on a four-year deal, but had been signed with the future in mind, as he is only 18.

However, an injury crisis at right-back saw the player drafted in to make his debut in the Betfred Cup quarter-final against Partick Thistle.

A stand-out performer

He turned in a fine display, and was a stand-out performer in the Hoops’ emphatic 5-0 victory. Since then though, he has not featured for the first-team again.

That could be a mistake by Neil Lennon. The player deserves another chance to prove that the performance against Partick wasn’t a one-off against a Championship side.

It is easy to see why Neil Lennon has decided not to select the player for the first-team again. He won’t want to put too much pressure on the player, who is still at the beginning of his career.

In competition with experienced duo

The Hoops also have two right-backs at the club, in Moritz Bauer and Hatem Abd Elhamed. When fit, that duo have been battling it out for the right-back position.

However, Bauer is only at the club on loan until the end of the season. Elhamed can also play centre-back, and has this season, so there is a place in the squad available for the player.

Perhaps Frimpong could turn out to be the next Kieran Tierney. That is maybe setting the bar too high, but it won’t be known how good he is unless he has a run of games in the team.

Hopefully Frimpong will be in the Hoops squad for the first game after the international split against Ross County. He deserves another chance to show the Hoops fans and Neil Lennon just how good a player he could be.
