Jonny Hayes should be next in line for new Celtic contract

The recent announcement from Celtic that Nir Bitton had signed a new deal with the club was one that was overdue. In a few weeks’ time, the player could have spoken to other clubs about joining them on a pre-contract agreement next season.

However, that is not going to happen now that the player has signed a deal until 2023. Now that Bitton’s future has been sorted, there is one other player at Celtic who should be given a new contract.

He is in a similar situation to Bitton, where his contract expires at the end of the season, and he can talk to teams about pre-contract deals next month. That player is Jonny Hayes.

Celtic might have three left-backs at the moment, but Hayes is still a valuable part of the squad. This was shown when Neil Lennon selected him for two huge games recently.

Hayes got the nod to start over Greg Taylor in the 2-1 win over Lazio in Rome. He also started in the Betfred Cup Final win over Rangers.

The fact that Hayes was selected in both of those games shows that Neil Lennon values him as a player. That should be rewarded with a new deal.

Extremely useful squad player

Hayes might not start every game for Celtic. However, he is a more than useful squad player to have in the side. That is why he should be given a new deal before he has a chance to speak to other clubs.

Of the players most likely to be given new contracts at Celtic, Bitton and Hayes were the most pressing concerns. Bitton has now been sorted, and it is time for the same to happen to Hayes. A two-year deal would be ideal for the player.

It’s one down and one to go for new Celtic deals, Bitton was first, Hayes should not be far behind.
