Kelechi Iheanacho’s role in Martin O’Neill’s Celtic squad is clearer than ever after Falkirk win

Eyebrows were raised when Celtic fans saw that Kelechi Iheanacho would not be starting against Falkirk.

Despite scoring a brace against St Mirren, Iheanacho was named among the substitutes again as Martin O’Neill chose to start Daizen Maeda down the middle.

It was a move that paid off as Maeda got a brace while Iheanacho came off the bench. That alone proves the role that the Nigerian will play for the remainder of the season.

Who was your star player against Falkirk?

Kelechi Iheanacho is the designated impact sub at Celtic

No striker wants to be the impact sub, but somebody has to play that role sometimes and that’s what the 30-year-old is with the Hoops.

Neither one of Tomas Cvancara nor Junior Adamu have done anything to prove themselves whereas Iheanacho has turned up when it matters.

However, when he came off the bench against Falkirk, his first touch was poor and he didn’t seem overly enthusiastic about chasing the ball down.

Yes, Maeda has been out of sorts, but he is also more reliable having done the business for the Hoops for several years.

Kelechi Iheanacho should still be offered a new contract

While it is clear that he isn’t a starter, and that the Bhoys will be in the market for a striker, Celtic should still consider offering him a contract.

His experience of the game is vital, particularly in a winning environment, and could help to act as a mentor for a younger, fresher option.

Those sorts of players are just as vital, as proven by bringing back Kieran Tierney and captain Callum McGregor.
