Kristoffer Ajer is at risk of losing his place in the Celtic starting line-up

Celtic’s 5-2 win over Hibs in the Betfred Cup was a study in contrasts. Going forward the Hoops were at times irresistible. They scored five goals and could have scored at least three more, as they hit the post twice and created numerous other chances.

However, the same cannot be said of the defence. The Hoops looked poor at the back at times. The first goal conceded was down to a poor touch by Boli Bolingoli. However, the second goal was the fault of Kristoffer Ajer. He allowed Florian Kamberi a free header which brought Hibs back into the game.

Hibs then proceeded to have their best spell of the game, but the Hoops were able to see that out and add a late goal which killed the game off.

Struggled to match form of last season

Neil Lennon might well be concerned with some of Ajer’s performances this season. He has struggled to match his excellent run of form of last season. Lennon will still have faith in the player. However, he must cut out the errors that have crept into his game.

He made errors against Rennes, Hibs and Livingston. His next test comes against Lazio on Thursday. If he can keep Ciro Immobile quiet, it would make a big difference to his season.

However, should he perform poorly in Rome, Neil Lennon might well elect to make a change at centre-back. Nir Bitton is available, and Hatem Abd Elhamed can also play in that position.

Manager knows his ideal centre-back partnership

There is no doubt that Neil Lennon would like his first-choice centre-back partnership to be Ajer and Christopher Jullien. They have the makings of a good partnership. But whilst Ajer keeps making those errors, the partnership may not develop as it should.

Hopefully this is just a poor spell for Ajer. After all, he has shown numerous times in the past that he is an excellent centre-back. Perhaps he will do so once more against Lazio.
