Kristoffer Ajer has had an indifferent few weeks for Celtic. Firstly, he committed the needless foul which gave away a penalty in the 1-1 draw with Rennes.

Then he scored an own goal and had a pretty poor game overall in the recent 1-1 draw with Hibs. Ajer has had a very good calendar year overall for the Hoops, but he is in a bit of a poor run of form at the moment.

Now that some Celtic replacements are available though, he must look to up his game.

The Hoops boss recently revealed that Nir Bitton is back in training. He can play at centre-back, and looked good in the role up until his recent injury. There is also the possibility that Hatem Abd Elhamed could play at centre-back for the Hoops.

At the moment Christopher Jullien seems to be one of the first choice centre-backs at the club.

If Ajer does not improve his performances, he could find himself out of the side, as there are two players ready to take his place in Bitton and Elhamed.

Good performance vs Cluj would be a boost

A good game for Ajer to get back to his best will be the upcoming Europa League match against Cluj. Ajer featured in the 4-3 loss to Cluj which put the Hoops out of the Champions League.

However, on this occasion he will be playing with a different centre-back partner in Christopher Jullien. Jullien has been excellent for the Hoops in recent weeks, and is arguably Celtic’s best defender at the moment.

Ajer needs to start to matching Jullien’s level of performance. Should he do this, and get back to playing as well as he can, then the Hoops won’t have to make any changes in defence.

However, should Ajer’s indifferent form continue, then both Bitton and Elhamed look more than capable of taking Ajer’s place in the starting line-up.
