When the Celtic team to play Rennes on Thursday night was announced, the biggest concern was going to be who would score the goals for the Hoops with Odsonne Edouard ruled out.
Neil Lennon placed his faith in Lewis Morgan, as the Hoops winger played as Celtic’s most attacking player on the night. The move was undeniably a gamble. Morgan is not a natural striker, and he had not started a game for the Hoops since Betfred Cup win over Partick Thistle back in September.
Best performance for the Hoops so far

However, Lennon’s gamble paid off, as Morgan turned in what has to be his best performance in a Celtic jersey. He gave the Hoops the lead in the match with a finish a striker would have been proud of, as he steered James Forrest’s cross into the net for the opening goal in Celtic’s 3-1 win.
His overall performance aside from that was very good, and he can be delighted with how he performed. It is perhaps not going too far to suggest that Morgan’s goal and all-round performance may have saved his Celtic career.
After featuring at the start of the season on a regular basis, Morgan had rarely featured for the Hoops in the last few months. He has made only six starts for Celtic this season.
Manager wanted to take player on loan

In fact, St Mirren boss Jim Goodwin recently spoke about bringing the player back to St Mirren on loan in January.
Any talk of that should be gone now though, as the player has shown that he can cut in at a high level. Morgan will be hopeful that the goal and performance will lead to more playing time on a regular basis for the Hoops. There is no reason for it not to.
In fact, the player arguably deserves to keep his place in the team for Sunday’s visit to Ross County. Should that be the case, it will be interesting to see if he plays on the wing, or as a striker. Regardless, Morgan should now look ahead with confidence to the next few weeks as a Celtic player. He could well feature on a regular basis for the club. He has earned that after his performance against Rennes.
