Mark McGhee’s comments on Martin O’Neill will resonate with plenty of Celtic supporters because he focused on the one thing that really matters.

His argument was not based on nostalgia or fan pressure. It was based on whether O’Neill remains the right man to help Celtic today.

Mark McGhee’s Celtic argument is about merit, not sentiment

Speaking about O’Neill returning to Celtic, McGhee said: “Well, I hope they didn’t do it for that reason [just because he won a double].

“And I hope that they’re intelligent enough and strong enough to make it for the right decisions and because Martin is the right guy at this point, not because they’ve won the league and there’s pressure from a group of fans because they’re chanting Martin’s name.

“Martin’s the right guy at this moment in time. Give him the job until someone else is is ready to take it.”

That is the key point. McGhee was not arguing for O’Neill because of reputation alone. He was arguing for him because he believes he is the best candidate.

Martin O’Neill’s Celtic record strengthens McGhee’s view

O’Neill’s first spell at Celtic remains one of the most successful managerial eras in the club’s modern history. He won seven major trophies and guided the Hoops to the 2003 UEFA Cup Final.

McGhee knows exactly what O’Neill brought to Celtic. That is why his endorsement carries more weight than simple supporter nostalgia.

McGhee’s Celtic message goes beyond past success

The most interesting part of McGhee’s comments is that he specifically rejected the idea of making a decision simply because fans were chanting O’Neill’s name.

Instead, he focused on experience, leadership and suitability. That is a far stronger argument than relying on memories of previous success.

Many Celtic supporters will recognise the logic

Supporters naturally hold O’Neill in high regard because of what he achieved at Celtic. However, McGhee’s argument is not really about the past.

It is about whether O’Neill can still offer value today. That is why his comments are likely to resonate with many Celtic fans.

Ultimately, McGhee’s case is simple. The deciding factor should not be sentiment. It is whether Martin O’Neill remains the right person for Celtic right now.
