Michael Nicholson’s Martin O’Neill statement exposes Celtic’s biggest problem

Michael Nicholson is absolutely right to back Martin O’Neill. After delivering a domestic double and earning a permanent contract, few Celtic supporters would argue with the decision.

Yet the chief executive’s latest comments also highlight a wider issue that has followed him throughout his time in charge at Celtic.

Supporters are not asking for weekly updates from Michael Nicholson. They are asking for a clearer idea of where Celtic is heading under his leadership.

In announcing O’Neill’s Celtic appointment, Nicholson said: “We are really pleased to keep Martin as manager. His knowledge and experience proved vital to us last season and we know his leadership will be hugely important to us going forward.

“He is someone who continues to deliver, who knows how to win and a manager we have absolute confidence in to once again drive the team through the next period.

“We have important challenges ahead and the immediate priority of everyone at the club is to ensure we are ready to tackle these with confidence and deliver success again for our supporters.”

The praise for O’Neill is understandable. The reference to “important challenges ahead” is where the more interesting discussion begins.

Celtic were right to reward Martin O’Neill

There is no serious case against O’Neill receiving the job on a permanent basis.

He guided Celtic to a domestic double and restored stability during a difficult period. Nicholson’s confidence in the manager is backed by results, making this one of the easiest major decisions the club has made in recent years.

The issue is not the appointment. It is the message that came with it.

Celtic supporters still do not know what those challenges are

When Nicholson speaks about “important challenges ahead”, supporters are entitled to wonder exactly what he means.

Is he referring to European progress? Recruitment? Squad evolution? Long-term investment? The statement never says.

Questions surrounding European progress, recruitment strategy and how Celtic intend to use their financial advantage continue to surface among supporters.

That has become a recurring theme around Celtic’s executive leadership. Big announcements are made, but the wider vision behind them is rarely explained in any meaningful detail.

Celtic fans hear from managers far more than executives

Supporters have a clear understanding of what O’Neill wants from his team because managers regularly face questions, explain decisions and discuss ambitions.

The same cannot be said for Nicholson. Despite being the club’s chief executive, he remains a relatively distant figure from the supporter base. His appearances are infrequent and usually tied to official announcements.

That creates a situation where fans understand the manager’s vision better than the chief executive’s.

Celtic’s success should not remove the need for communication

Winning trophies will always be the priority and O’Neill has delivered them.

But success should not remove the need for leadership to explain where the club is heading next. Nicholson had an opportunity to outline what those “important challenges” actually are and how Celtic intend to meet them.

Instead, supporters were given another statement focused almost entirely on the manager.

O’Neill deserves the backing he has received. The bigger question is whether Celtic supporters will ever hear a similarly clear explanation of Nicholson’s own vision for the club.
