Former Celtic star Murdo MacLeod has expressed doubt about Christopher Jullien’s ability to be a first-choice defender for the club, The Scottish Sun report.
Jullien arrived at the club back in June for a reported £7m fee (The Herald), making him the most expensive acquisition of the transfer window so far.
That kind of fee comes with big expectations at Celtic.
The Frenchman has been slow to cement himself in manager Neil Lennon’s plans. The greatest example of that was being left out of our biggest match of the summer at home to Cluj earlier this month.
Since then he’s had had more action, but MacLeod isn’t yet convinced he’s showing enough, specifically noting his performance against Dunfermline last week.
As quoted by The Scottish Sun, he said: “Celtic look great going forward, but they have been poor at the back and they have got to look at that.
“You need to get the balance of attacking and defence. They were all over the place at times against Cluj.
“Jullien then came into the side, but the way he played against Dunfermline, he didn’t show he should be the first-choice centre-back.”
The former Hoops coach would then go on to suggest the upcoming derby at Rangers will have lots of goals in it at both ends.
Are people judging Jullien too harshly?
It’s far too early in the player’s Celtic career to making definitive judgements on his ability either. It’s true he’s had a few shaky moments in the heart of the defence, but he’s only started five matches.
Having played the vast majority of his football so far in France, it was also going to be a big transition for the player. He deserves the time and matches to show what he can offer.
He now appears to be getting a much-needed run in the team.
The 26-year-old has all the physical attributes to be a success. Hopefully with coaching and increased comfort he can improve from where he is currently.
This week is a big one for him too. If he can prove to be effective against AIK and Rangers, he’ll be well on his way to justifying his heavy price tag.
