Celtic boss Neil Lennon was recently urged by this website, and no doubt by some Hoops fans all over the world to make a strong statement over the SFA’s decision to give Ryan Christie a three-match ban for an incident with Rangers’ Alfredo Morelos. The statement on the club’s website could have been more critical of the decision, but in a way it was understandable that it wasn’t.
Lennon has now given his verdict on the decision, and his words are certainly strong. He has called on the Scottish FA to apologise and admit they got the decision wrong.
“I would like to see common sense prevail. I’d like them to say, sorry, we made a mistake” Lennon said, as quoted by the Daily Record.
“We are angry”
“I’ve seen worse that either go uncited or go unpunished even when they have been cited. We are angry about it. The club will speak to the SFA, though I don’t know if they will get any clarification on it or not. But from our point of view we are bitterly disappointed with the outcome” he concluded.
Will Celtic get an apology from the SFA? That remains to be seen, but it isn’t likely. The talks that the club are going to have with the SFA probably won’t lead to much either, and more controversial decisions will be made in the future.
Manager excels at standing up for club
What can’t be denied though is the passion in Lennon’s comments. He may have some faults as a manger, but standing up for the club isn’t one of them. His comments will be welcomed by the Hoops support, who would have been dismayed by the ban that Christie has received.
It is good to see Lennon stand up for his players and for Celtic, and demand action from what looks to be a very poor decision by the governing body. A move like this can being the club together, and Lennon has done the right thing.
