New Celtic deals for key men shows that club is looking to the future
Celtic have spent the last few months giving long-term contracts to some of their most important players. The most recent to sign a new deal is Mikey Johnston, who signed on for five years on Saturday.
Any clubs interested in Hoops players will have to spend big
This is good business by Celtic for a number of reasons. Firstly, it ensures that the players will still be at Celtic Park for the foreseeable future. Secondly, it means that if any team wants to sign any of Celtic’s players that are on long-term deals, they will have to pay big money to do so.
Perhaps more significantly, the recently agreed deals show that Celtic are looking beyond winning nine, then 10 in a row.
A core of players will be at the club for years to come
Celtic look to be building a core of players who will be at the club for at least the next five years.
That is a very smart move. It shows that the club will still have a number of talented players at the club, who can guide the next generation of talent into the first-team. It is a real bonus for any players that breaks into the first-team, that they can talk to the likes of James Forrest and Callum McGregor, players who have won it all for Celtic.
Obviously Celtic’s goal this season and the next is to win nine, then 10 in a row. But the likes of Neil Lennon and Peter Lawwell are looking ahead with the deals that Celtic have completed over the last two months.
It will be interesting to see if more players agree new deals with the club in the next few weeks. It would provide another bonus to the club and the fans in the battle to win the title.
