Nir Bitton should be given new Celtic contract

It has to be said that Nir Bitton goes under the radar when you compare him to some of Celtic’s other, more prominent players.

The utility man just seems to turn up, and do the job that is asked of him with a minimal amount of fuss. That was certainly the case in the recent Glasgow derby at Ibrox, which the Hoops won 2-0.

Bitton played at centre-back for the Hoops alongside Christopher Jullien. Until he was forced off with an injury in the second-half, Bitton turned in a fine display.

He, alongside Jullien, stopped almost every Rangers attack which came their way. One particular highlight for Bitton was an excellent challenge on Jermain Defore in one of Rangers’ rare forays into the Celtic penalty box.

Bitton can be very pleased with his performance. He has played so often at centre-back for Celtic this season that he could be regarded as a defender, rather than a midfielder.

Bitton has not let the Hoops down this season. His excellent performances should be rewarded with a new contract by the club.

The player’s current deal expires at the end of the season. The Hoops should look to resolve this by handing Bitton an extension.

That does not necessarily mean that Bitton will start every game for Celtic. He has always been a player who has been in and out of the side during his time at the club.

However, when called upon he has almost always performed well for the Hoops. Indeed, it could be argued that Bitton and Jullien are currently Celtic’s first-choice centre-backs.

That could change during the season. For now though, when he is fit, Bitton should be one of the first names of the Celtic team-sheet.

He has been a vital part of the Celtic squad since the start of the season. Therefore, a new contract should be announced sooner rather than later.
