Before the Betfred Cup Final, an awful lot of talk centred around the striker battle between Celtic’s Odsonne Edouard and Rangers’ Alfredo Morelos. Both players have been in excellent form this season with Edouard scoring 13 goals and Morelos 25 goals. Both have been key men for their respective sides.
However, both players came into the game with questions to answer. Would Morelos score against Celtic for the first-time? Would Edouard be fit enough to start the game? The answer to both of these questions would turn out to be ‘no’.
Played less of the game, had a better impact on team
However, when it comes down to who won the battle of the strikers then it has to be Edouard. This is the case even though he only came on in the 59th minute. It can be argued that he had more of an impact on the game than Morelos, who only succeeded in missing chance after chance against Celtic yet again.
Edouard came on and had an instant impact. He was fouled in the lead up to Celtic’s goal in the 1-0 win. Edouard also set up Mikey Johnston for the Hoops’ other chance on the day, which he put wide when clean through on goal.
If that is what he did when he wasn’t fully it, imagine what he could have done if he had played from the start. Celtic would have had much more of a foothold on the game.
Rival striker helped his side lose game
Whereas Edouard’s contribution helped his side win the game, Morelos’ helped his side to lose the game. Particularly the penalty that was saved from Fraser Forster. From that moment on, Celtic were the better side.
Hopefully by the times the teams meet again on the 29th of December Edouard will be fully fit. If that is the case then he has the chance to once more prove just who the best striker in Scotland is. Celtic fans already know the answer, but it will be good to see Edouard proving it once more.
