Odsonne Edouard must start Boxing Day clash against St. Mirren

There’s little point in Celtic beating Rangers on Sunday if we don’t take care of St. Mirren first. The vast majority of Hoops supporters will already be looking ahead to the Glasgow Derby clash on Sunday but before that we have another important game against the Buddies.

It’s stating the obvious, but with three points up for grabs in both matches, the Paisley clash on Boxing Day deserves the same amount of care and respect as its successor three days later.

That means that all of Celtic’s top stars must turn out against Jim Goodwin’s lowly side – and that includes Odsonne Edouard.

Edouard could do with the minutes against St. Mirren

There’s a feeling growing that the Frenchman must be protected at all costs with the game against Rangers in mind. We missed him so badly in the opening hour of the Betfred Cup final against the same opposition and many would fear for our chances if he wasn’t to feature on Sunday.

But Edouard is so important for us right now that he must play in every match. The forward may not quite be back at the sparkling level of earlier this season but his value was still strikingly evident on Saturday as he struck the winner in a narrow victory over Aberdeen.

Edouard hasn’t completed a game for Celtic since early November, signalling that he’s still not fully fit. Playing him against St. Mirren would give him the perfect opportunity to get some more minutes under his belt, and possibly boost his confidence further with a goal or two.

Added to this, we don’t exactly have a back-up striker who we can rely on yet. Leigh Griffiths looks miles off the pace at present and you would fear a little if he led the line in Paisley. Vakoun Bayo and Lewis Morgan aren’t much better so it really is Edouard or nobody.

Lennon has been clear with his ‘one game at a time’ mantra all throughout December. Hopefully he backs his words up with action this midweek and starts Edouard against the Buddies.
