Celtic’s Odsonne Edouard is in quite possibly the best form of his footballing career.

The striker’s two goals in the 4-o win over Motherwell on Wednesday night took his total for the season to 23 goals.

Following his performance against Motherwell, former Celtic striker Chris Sutton compared the player to Hoops icon Henrik Larsson.

That is very high praise indeed for the player. Larsson was a true one-off when if comes to Celtic players, and a comparison to him shows just how well Edouard is playing.

Striker will be closely watched in Europa League

Edouard’s brilliant form will no doubt be catching the eye of teams in England and abroad. They will be closely watching how he performs in the Hoops’ upcoming Europa League matches against Copenhagen later this month.

Edouard’s future at the club will be something that the Celtic board and Neil Lennon will be thinking about. It seems inevitable that offers will come in for the player during the summer.

Celtic can counteract that by awarding the player with a new contract. That contract should include a pay rise which makes Edouard the highest paid player at the club.

With Celtic going for nine then hopefully 10 in a row, the club will need to keep the players that will be integral to the chances of winning those titles.

The Hoops’ most important player

Edouard is perhaps the most integral player of them all. He was always a key player for the Hoops, but this season he has taken his game to another level.

That should be rewarded with a new deal from the club.

Will a new contract stop Edouard from eventually leaving Celtic? No, we have to realistic about things.

However, giving the player a pay rise and new long-term deal could at least ensure that Edouard remains at Celtic for another few seasons at least, to help the Hoops in the battle for 10 in a row.

Such a move would be applauded by the Celtic support, and maintain the feel good factor currently running through the club.
