The Celtic Academy team’s 4-1 Glasgow Cup win over Clyde on Wednesday night was notable for a good Celtic performance from Luca Connell.
The midfield starlet, who signed in the summer from Bolton, scored and had an assist in the victory. Connell, who is 18, seems to be making good progress in the Hoops Academy side.
However, as the January transfer window enters its last few weeks, the staff at Celtic may have a decision to make on the player’s immediate future.
Fellow summer signing recently left club on loan
That is, should he be sent out on loan for the second-half of the season. Fellow Celtic summer signing Lee O’Connor recently left the club to join Partick Thistle on loan until the end of the season.
Neil Lennon and Celtic will have to weigh up if that is what the club should do when it comes to Connell. The difference between O’Connor and Connell though is that O’Connor has a bit more experience.
He has even made his international debut for Ireland. That has not happened yet with Connell.
Therefore, Celtic might feel that the player will benefit from playing more often in the reserves. That could be what Neil Lennon decides to do when it comes to Connell.
Still time for player to be sent on loan in future
There is still plenty of time for Connell to be sent out on loan at some stage in the future. It doesn’t necessarily have to be this season.
Neil Lennon may feel that the player will be better served staying at Celtic for the rest of the season, rather than playing for a team in the Scottish Championship for example.
He has yet to make the first-team breakthrough that Jeremie Frimpong has, but that is no slight on the player. He has more challenges to face as he is a midfielder.
What the player wants to do is also worth looking at. He could decide that he wants to play at a higher level than he currently does for the Hoops Academy side.
The good thing is that Connell does seem to have a very bright future at the club. Whatever move he chooses to do should benefit him and the club in the long run.
